"On one of my global botanical expeditions I found myself in a narrow dugout canoe travelling the Amazon. While searching for Acai up a distant tributary of the Amazon River I was sweating like a gringo and drinking all the fresh water I could get my hands on.
As we sat single file in the canoe one of my Brazilian buddies tapped me on the shoulder and passed a coconut water drink to me. I had never consumed one of these but was reassured by my friends that I needed to drink this to help my condition of profuse sweating and unquenchable thirst.
The taste was not what I had expected. I was prepared for a sugary coconut taste that never arrived. Instead it tasted a little salty with a very smooth and faintly sweet sense about it. The finish was amazingly smooth. Soon after finishing this rather tasteless beverage my thirst was all but resolved and my sweating slowed to a more normal pace.
I was impressed with the remarkable results from the coconut water, so much so that immediately I knew I could flavor it and bring it to market. And after some serious tests and formulations I arrived at what we call Dr. Tim's ISO-5, complete hydration drink. ISO-5 means Isotonic with all 5 essential electrolytes. Isotonic = a solution that has the same tonicity as some other solution with which it is compared. For example blood serum is isotonic to coconut water. Solutions that have the same tonicity will result in no net flow of water across the cell membrane. So when you consume ISO-5 you restore to your cells the 5 essential electrolytes found in coconut water that then create a condition of tonicity or isotonic.
