Acai Smoothies and Acai Bowls

The Acai berry rage is on and is growing fast. It’s almost impossible these days to miss reading about, hearing about and seeing the fabulous acai berry in health food markets, pharmacies and supermarkets in the form of juices, pills and now as an ingredient in foods, ice-creams, acai bowls and smoothies. Many TV programs have extolled the fruit as a superfood – a food having superior nutritive components, all beneficial to human health.

As a former resident of Brazil, Dr. Tim studied the nutritional benefits of local foods and he was well aware, years ago, that acai was one of the principle foodstuffs in the Amazon region, a huge jungle area with limited agricultural land available.

He traveled to the Amazon to see for himself why acai was so popular with the natives. He found that the fruit is indeed the main reason for the survival of the Amazon indians and has been for centuries. Without acai readily available, growing on thousands of acai palms along the river banks, the natives would not have had the vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, plant proteins and fiber lacking in their once inadequate diet of fish and manioc roots.

The natives of the Amazon region are the original discoverers and users of acai fruits as their basic source of nutritive food elements their bodies need. They still gather the berries and consume them daily in the form of acai hot food bowls with fish and shrimp or cold dessert bowls with added fruits. The new thing in Brazil and now in the States are Acai Smoothies and Acai Bowls.

Here’s Smoothie Recipe #1

Try it! You’ll like it!

Dr Tim’s Acai Smoothie Delight

For one person. To your blender add:

One cup of Dr. Tim’s tasty Brazilian Acai Juice

One tablespoon of honey or agave syrup (you choose your favorite natural sweetener)

3/4 cup of diced, semi-frozen pineapple chunks

3/4 cup of semi-frozen fresh peaches (or sugar-free canned peaches if fresh peaches are not in season)

1/2 cup of semi-frozen apricot pieces (or sugar-free canned if apricots are not in season)

6 oz of your favorite flavor of low-fat or non-fat yogurt (pineapple yogurt is popular for this mix)

With all the ingredients in your blender in the order shown above, cover and turn it on to its lowest blade speed until most of the ingredients are in small chunks. Then turn blender up to high speed until the mix is nice and smooth. Turn off blender and spoon your Acai Smoothie Delight into a tall, chilled glass. Lick spoon.

Recipe for Dr. Tim’s Acai Smoothie


4 oz of Dr. Tim’s Juice Acai Juice
8 whole strawberries (frozen)
8 slices of bananas (frozen)
1/2 cup of apple juice (you can substitute soy milk or yogurt)
1-2 tablespoons of organic honey (sweeten to taste)
1/2 cup sherbet ice cream

Optional Health Boosters:

1 oz of Dr. Tim’s Goji, Noni or Mangosteen Juice.
